Spring Car Maintenance Tips in Brighton – Grinding Brakes and Other Common Issues

As sure as winter comes, it will also leave again and welcome spring. After a long winter, your vehicle will need some attention. Spring and summer usually come with a lot of adventures to enjoy the warm and sunny Brighton weather, you’ll want to make sure your vehicle is up to the challenge.

Spring vehicle maintenance usually begins with the brakes. It’s fair to say that your brakes are one of the most important mechanisms on your vehicle. They are essential for the safety of you, your passengers and everyone else on the road. Regular brake maintenance will not only ensure a safe ride but can save you a lot of money and stress.

Your brakes will usually tell you when there’s a problem by making a grinding sound. This is especially common when spring arrives. We’ve seen it too many times, drivers ignore the ugly sounds their brakes are making until there’s a major issue, or they fail in an emergency situation.

Stepping on the brakes seems fairly simple; apply some pressure with your foot and your vehicle stops, but your braking system is made of many parts. Brake pads play in essential role in your brake system’s function, they are the point of contact that absorbs your vehicle’s energy and stops your vehicle’s wheels from moving. It’s a thankless job; the lifespan of brake pads will vary from vehicle to vehicle, but on average brake pads should be replaced every 80,000 km.

Hearing a grinding sound when you brake is usually a sign that your brake pads need some attention. The sounds are usually created by your rotor disc making contact with part of the caliper. This is typically a result of extreme wear of the brake pads or the rotors. It’s also not uncommon for a stone to get lodged in the caliper, this will also create an unusual sound. Stones or other foreign objects in the calibers will usually create noise when the vehicle is in motion. You can try to drive forward and backward repeatedly to dislodge the item, otherwise, you’ll want to get your brakes looked at by a technician.

In addition to having your brakes checked you’ll want to check your vehicle’s fluid levels and quality. Check your brake, power steering and transmission fluids. Also, ensure your coolant levels are good and that your washer fluid is topped up.

Cold temperatures do a number on a vehicle’s battery, it’s a good idea to have your battery tested to ensure its functioning properly. You’ll also want to make sure the battery is mounted properly and that the connections are clean and tightly secured. The typical lifespan of a car battery is five years, if it’s older you might want to think about replacing it. It’s not just cold weather that can hurt a battery, extremely warm weather can also cause issues with your battery’s performance.

It’s important to make spring vehicle maintenance a priority in the spring. Have your vehicle’s brakes and other components checked for winter damage and wear. A proactive approach will keep your vehicle running safely and smooth for the upcoming spring and summer.
