The Importance of Regular Oil Changes in Maintaining Your Vehicle’s Health

Keeping up with regular oil changes is one of the most important things you can do to ensure the health of your vehicle. Typically, it’s recommended that you change your oil every 5,000 km to 8,000 km. Making sure that your vehicle sees the shop when it’s time for an oil change is imperative to health of your car for years to come.

There are many components in your engine that make it run properly. Motor oil is literally the lifeblood that keeps your engine working properly. It helps reduce the accumulation of carbon and varnish from appearing in your engine. Engines also get hot, really hot and quickly. There are thousands of tiny explosions happening under your hood every minute; oil keeps this heat from the combustion chamber. Without motor oil your engine would blow up due to high amount of heat from these mini explosions. Not what you want happening while driving from Brighton to Toronto!

The oil in your engine does not last forever. The combination of constant heat and the collection of varnish and carbons will turn your once clear  and pristine motor oil into a nasty black sludge. It doesn’t matter how expensive the oil was, eventually it will need replaced.

There are lots of different kinds of engine oil on the market. Your owner’s manual should give a recommendation on which oil works for your vehicle (there’s usually a stamp on your engine or reservoir cap that will tell you as well).

As you can imagine, oil turning into thick sludge is not good for your vehicle. Our shop has seen cars exceed the recommended oil change suggestions, and it’s not pretty (trust us).  The sludge-like oil can clog your engine. When oil is too old, we usually begin to see carbon build-ups on the cooler parts of the engine such as the crankcase and around the camshafts and valves. Carbon deposits will literally begin to come out of the old oil, not something that’s healthy for your car.

This can lead to needing your engine cleaned or needing to replace pistons. Both of which are not shop bills you want to have. The small amount of time and cost to have your oil changed regularly will go a long way towards preventing such damages.

Generally, the rule-of-thumb is to book an oil change every 5,000 km or every three months. If you drive a lot, you’ll want to come in every three months. It may be worth looking at your owner’s manual or the website of your vehicle’s manufacturer to get an exact gauge. Also, we usually recommend coming in for an oil change if you’re heading out for a road trip. If you’re regularly towing weight or driving in nasty weather for an extended period of time, you’ll want to get your oil changed more frequently.
